The State of Alabama Department of Education recently ranked Brewton Elementary School seventh in the state, based on students' Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) scores.
Marriott said that before last school year began, Brewton Elementary School administrators and teachers really worked to identify what needs were not being met and made some adjustments to meet those reading needs.
DIBELS was administered to kindergarten through third grade last year, and Brewton's ranking of seventh is based on the combination of those four grades.
This is the fourth year that BES has used DIBELS as an indiator of reading skills, but the first time the State Department of Education has provided a ranking of all elementary schools in the state.
BES was one of the first 16 schools to participate in the Alabama Reading Initiative seven years ago.
