Staff Sgt. Wendell Richburg received confirmation Friday morning that Detachment 1 of the 1165th MP Company will receive the Presidential Commendation and hold a special Freedom Salute ceremony on Tuesday.
The Freedom Salute ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. on March 1 at 95 Airport Drive.
The Presidential Commendation is one of the most prestigious awards presented. It is awarded by the Department of Army for combat operations.
According to Richburg, this is the first time a National Guard unit in the state of Alabama has received the citation.
Since the Presidential Commendation is such a large ceremony, it will be held in the summer, Richburg said.
The Brewton unit is comprised of 26 men and women and has been deployed twice, first in 1991 for Desert Shield/Storm.
