An important archeological dig in East Brewton will receive state funding to assist in further excavation.
House Speaker Seth Hammett announced that the city will receive a $15,000 grant to assist in locating Fort Crawford, a 19th century site in Escambia (Ala.) County. Funding for the grant comes from the Alabama Historical Commission.
East Brewton Mayor Terry Clark said Fort Crawford is the last documented fort in Alabama that has yet to be found. The Historical Commission grant will be paid as expenses for the project accrue.
Students from Troy State University will be working on the site beginning this summer, Clark said. Clark said both the City of East Brewton and Tom McMillan lobbied hard for this grant, which will allow for a chance to acquire tourist dollars if the site is to be rebuilt.
