An Atmore man has been arrested for smuggling contraband into the Escambia County Detention Center after making a drop off of drugs to inmates housed there.
John Lee Davis III, 20, of 1192 Martinville Road in Atmore was arrested on Aug. 14 after security cameras revealed that he had jumped the fence surrounding the jail to make the drop, Maj. Mike Murphy with the Escambia County Sheriff's office said.
Murphy said that correctional officers immediately entered the unit in question while deputies chased the violator as he jumped back over the fence.
Items seized by correctional officers included a single methadone pill, ecstasy pills, smoking tobacco with rolling papers, cigars, and blunt cigars, Murphy said.
Davis was charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, promoting prison contraband - second degree, possession of marijuana -first degree, and criminal trespass - first degree, Murphy said.
The case remains under investigation by the Escambia County Sheriff's Office.
