Devaki Bailey arrived at her East Brewton business Thursday morning to a surprise: The glass front door had been smashed to pieces.
Bailey's store - D&J Imports - and neighboring shop Flowers From Heaven were both broken into between 11 p.m. Wednesday and 6 a.m. Thursday, East Brewton police said.
Officer Ricky Carpenter said a thief tried to enter the back of D&J Imports, but when that failed, the suspect tried to enter Flowers From Heaven next door.
Shirley Taite, Bailey's mother, operates Flowers From Heaven. Already the victim of a break-in in the past, she has kept the door blocked, so the thief was unable to get in.
Apparently that's when the suspect smashed the glass front door at D&J Imports and stole some clothing.
Bailey said there was very little money in the shop, and it was not stolen.
Bailey is hopeful that BankTrust's branch bank across the street may have captured the thief on its surveillance cameras.
The East Brewton Police Department is investigating the burglary, and Carpenter said anyone with information that would lead to the arrest of a suspect should call the department.
