Jacob Fillmore and Wes Maddox set the table for the rest of the lineup, Cody Smith delivered the big blow and Ryan Hunt did the rest on the mound to lead the Brewton Little League Age 11-12 All-Stars to a 7-1 win over East Brewton in Sunday's second round of the District 5 Tournament held at Evergreen.
Brewton tried to earn a berth in the championship round Tuesday when it met Opp. The championship round will get underway Thursday at 7 p.m. If necessary, a second championship game will be Friday at 7 p.m.
If Brewton came up short Tuesday, it will enter play in the elimination bracket tonight at 7 p.m. against either Andalusia or East Brewton. Tonight's winner will advance to the championship round where it will have to beat the winner of Tuesday's Brewton/Opp contest twice.
Both Fillmore and Maddox were key offensive sparks for Brewton Sunday. Fillmore had a pair of singles and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, while Maddox had a single, a double and scored two runs.
It was a two-run homer by Cody Smith in the top of the second inning off Brian Settle that gave Brewton a 2-0 lead it never relinquished.
Smith's homerun came one batter after Tyler Dehoff started the second inning rally with a triple.
East Brewton also got a roundtripper in the second inning, but the difference was Hunter Mullins' shot came with the bases empty and left East Brewton still down a run.
Brewton extended its lead by a pair of runs in the top of the third with four consecutive two-out singles by Maddox, Rasheem Thomas, William Whittle and Dehoff. Whittle's and Dehoff's hits were RBI hits.
Brewton ran its cushion up to 6-1 in the fifth with two more runs. Fillmore beat out an infield single and Maddox doubled. Both scored on wild pitches.
Brewton's final marker came in the sixth, a singles by Josh Maloy and Hunt set up a sacrifice fly by Fillmore.
East Brewton never got more than one runner on base in an inning against Hunt until the bottom of the sixth when Settle singled with one out and Mullins reached on an error.
