If the old saying &#8220practice makes perfect” is true, then the Brewton Babe Ruth 14-year-old All-Stars should have one heck of a state tournament run.
Practice is all the Brewton team has been able to do since the regular season ended back on June 7. By the time Brewton opens up play at the state tournament Wednesday at Sylacauga, 41 days will have passed since its players experienced any on-the-field competition.
Brewton received its state tournament berth by default, as it was the only member from District 7 to field a team.
Jernigan said it is tough for both hitting and pitching to stay sharp without game competition.
Jernigan is also hoping past experience with All-Star competition will help his players.
The state tournament will consist of two five-team pools. Brewton is guaranteed four games with two games on Wednesday at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. and two games Friday at 10:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. The top two teams in each pool will advance to the semifinals July 22. The title game is also July 22.
Jernigan said the schedule is a challenge.
