Mr. Herbert Duryea Gillis Jr., 82, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007, at his Brewton residence. He was a native and life-long resident of the Brewton area. He was a land surveyor by trade and was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of Alco Baptist Church and was preceded in death by two sisters, Barbara Brown and Martha White; a daughter, Amy Gillis; and a granddaughter, Amanda Gooding.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Gillis; three daughters, Joy (Mike) Sawyer, Jennifer Gillis, and Jamie (Walter) Steele, all of Brewton; one son, John (Cindy) Lancaster of Brewton’ a niece, Danner Whittaker; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, and special friends, Dan Hughes and Little Bit Gillis.
Funeral services were held Monday, Oct. 22, at 2 p.m. from the Chapel of Craver’s Funeral Home with the Rev. Jerry Caylor, the Rev. Doug Coburn, the Rev. Earle Green and Mrs. Debra Freeman officiating. Burial followed at Union Cemetery with Craver’s Funeral Home directing. Pallbearers were Walter Steele, Christopher Steele, Mike Sawyer, John Lancaster, Fritz Booth Jr., and Fritz Boothe III.
