Shop at home for the holidays

It's already beginning to look a lot like Christmas in downtown Brewton and East Brewton - and that means, believe it or not, there are only a few weeks left in the holiday shopping season.
But downtown Brewton merchants are trying to make that task a little easier again this year with a Holiday Preview sale scheduled for Thursday evening. Stores will be open until 8 p.m., and special discounts are available at just about every location.
The Holiday Preview is more than just a sale - it's a community event, with plans for local entertainment, food vendors and other special activities like an antique car display and hayrides.
All that celebration could make us forget one of the most important reasons we need to shop at home this holiday season. Keeping our dollars in the community benefits everyone - and not just the merchants who ring up your sale.
The money they make can be spent with other local businesses, which helps fuel the economy for all of us.
And every sale in the city limits brings sales tax dollars to our city's coffers - the money that pays for our municipal services.
That's not to say, of course, that we should ignore how much fun is to be had at the event. We're looking forward to seeing the unique merchandise our local stores have on display, and we're also looking forward to the personal service that comes when your friends and neighbors are helping you shop.
We encourage everyone to visit the stores for Thursday's sale.
Merchants have made it convenient, with trolley service to area parking lots and hours that accommodate nearly everyone's schedule. Don't miss it.
