After falling short in their previous six games of the new year, the W.S. Neal Lady Eagles picked up their first win of 2008 Thursday night with a 40-28 win over the J.U. Blacksher Lady Bulldogs.
Freda Folmar led the Eagles with 16 points as seven different Lady Eagles contributed points in the game to improve W.S. Neal to 7-13 on the season.
While appreciative of the win, Lambert was proud of his younger players.
Things did not start out the best for the Lady Eagles in the game as the score was tied at 4-4 with 5:34 left in the first quarter of play before the Lady Bulldogs from Blacksher went on an 8-0 run to hold a 10-4 lead with 2:07 left in the first quarter.
That would be the last points in the quarter for either team as Blacksher held a 10-4 lead at the end of the first quarter of play.
In the second quarter, things began to turn around for the Lady Eagles as they opened the quarter on a 9-0 run to take the lead at 13-10 with 5:03 left in the half.
During the run, Folmar added six points for the Lady Eagles as Megan Andrews had two and Katie Elliott added a free throw for the Lady Eagles.
Blacksher cut the Lady Eagle lead to one point on their next two offensive possessions as they connected for two-of-four free throws to bring the lead to 13-12 at the 3:38 mark.
W.S. Neal would outscore Blacksher 5-4 over the final 3:38 of the quarter to hold an 18-16 lead at the end of the first half of play.
In the third quarter, W.S. Neal took a 25-18 lead with 2:53 left after five points from Folmar and two from Elliott as W.S. held a 7-5 scoring advantage in the quarter and a 25-21 lead heading into the fourth quarter of play.
In the fourth quarter, W.S. Neal held a 15-7 advantage as they went on for the 12-point win 40-28.
All of Blacksher's points in the quarter came on free throws as they went seven-for-nine from the charity stripe.
Six different Lady Eagles scored in the fourth quarter as Tekshia Jones had two points, Andrews had two points, Day had two points, Folmar had three points, Elliott had four points and Breanna Allen had two points for a total of 15 points.
W.S. Neal was scheduled to play Hillcrest Friday night at home and will be back in action at home on Thursday, Jan. 31 against Flomaton.
Game time is set for around 6 p.m. in East Brewton.
