Babe Ruth Yankees, Red Sox take on regional teams

When most people hear the words Red Sox and Yankees in the same sentence, their minds automatically shift to the greatest rivalry in baseball between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox.
For the Brewton area, the Red Sox and Yankees advanced Babe Ruth teams feature 26 players vying about as hard as their Major League counterparts for wins in the region.
The Yankees are 2-1 on the season with wins over the Red Sox and Monroe County and a loss against Atmore. The Red Sox are 0-3 with losses to the Yankees, Monroe County and Atmore.
The two teams are coached by Steven Dickey for the Red Sox and Joey Shell for the Yankees.
Teams are set to play games on Tuesday and Friday nights.
Yankees 8, Red Sox 4
In their first game against each other last Saturday, the Yankees defeated the Red Sox 8-4.
Chip Edwards picked up the win on the mound for the Yankees as Derek Busby earned the loss for the Red Sox.
Edwards went six innings to earn the win and allowed four runs (one earned) on one hit, struck out eight and walked four.
Busby went two innings and allowed five runs (two earned) on two hits, walked two and struck out two in the loss.
Justin Payne and Robert Knowles pitched in relief of Busby.
After jumping out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning, the Red Sox allowed the Yankees to take a 5-2 lead in the bottom of the inning.
The Red Sox cut the lead to 6-4 in the top of the fourth inning before the Yankees scored two runs in the fourth to claim the 8-4 win.
Offensively for the Yankees, Corey Williams and Aaron Nelson both had 1-for-3 days with singles in the win. Both singles were the only two hits in the game for the Yankees. Edwards, Williams and Tyler Cross all had RBIs in the win.
For the Red Sox, Steven Warren had the lone Red Sox hit with a double in the top of the fourth inning. Corey Rilling provided the lone RBI in the top of the second inning.
Atmore 8, Red Sox 0
After getting only one hit in their first game against the Yankees, the Red Sox were no hit in their second game of the day on Saturday as Atmore defeated the Red Sox 8-0 dropping them to 0-2 on the season.
Corey Rilling took the loss on the mound for the Red Sox. Rilling went three innings and allowed five runs (two earned) on five hits, struck out two and walked four.
John Mathieu and Robert Knowles pitched in relief of Rilling in the loss.
Atmore scored four runs in the top of the first and one in the top of the second inning to take a 5-0 lead after two innings of play. After being held scoreless in the third and fourth innings, Atmore scored three runs in the top of the fifth to take the 8-0 win.
Atmore 5, Yankees 3
In the second game against Atmore, the Yankees dropped a 5-3 decision to Atmore to fall to 1-1 on the season.
Tyler Nall took the loss on the mound for the Yankees. Nall went two innings in relief of starting pitcher Tyler Cross. Cross went five innings and allowed three runs on eight hits and struck out two while walking three.
With the game tied at 3-3 in the top of the seventh inning, Nall surrendered two runs (none earned) on three hits while striking out one.
Offensively for the Yankees, Chris Edwards led the team with a 2-for-3 performance. Edwards had two singles and one RBI.
Bobby Freeman was 1-for-3 with a single and an RBI and Aaron Nelson was 1-for-3 with a single.
Caleb Bethea added a single in the win as he went 1-for-3. Tyler Cross had an RBI in the win.
Monroe Co. Jags 8, Red Sox 3
The Red Sox dropped their third straight game on Tuesday night as they fell to the Monroe County Jags 8-3.
Derek Busby took the loss on the mound for the Red Sox. Busby allowed six runs (two earned) on three hits in three innings and had two strikeouts and one walk.
Monroe County took an early 6-0 lead before the Red Sox cut the lead to 6-2 in the bottom of the third inning. The Jags added two runs in the fourth inning to take an 8-2 lead as the Red Sox added a late run in the game.
Seth Holland led the Red Sox at the plate with a 2-for-3 day. Holland had a single and a triple and an RBI in the loss.
John Mathieu was 1-for-3 with a single and Wesley Booker was 1-for-2 with a single with an RBI.
Yankees 11, Monroe Co. Jags 5
The Yankees jumped out to a 10-0 lead after two innings as they defeated Monroe County 11-5 in the night game of the doubleheader Tuesday at T.R. Miller Tiger field in Brewton.
William Shell took the win in the game as he went three innings and allowed no runs on two hits and struck out five.
Tyler Nall relieved Shell and went two innings and Chip Edwards pitched the final inning.
Caleb Bethea was 2-for-3 in the win with a single and a double and three RBIs to lead the Yankees.
Chip Edwards was 2-for-4 with two singles. Tyler Nall had a triple in the game and an RBI along with Corey Williams one RBI.
Bobby Freeman was 1-for-3 with a double and a RBI and Aaron Nelson added an RBI in the win.
