They knew they would be up against one of the better teams in the tournament, and they knew they would be seeing great pitching and great hitting.
All that preparation was not enough for the East Brewton 11-and-12-year-old Little League team as they opened up their tournament play with a 13-0 loss to Opp Saturday night in Brewton at the YMCA Sports Park.
Starting Opp pitcher Tyler Weeks struck out 14 East Brewton batters and allowed no runs and no hits in the win. Weeks also connected for one of four homeruns in the win.
East Brewton's Tyler Joyner took the loss on the mound for East Brewton. Joyner gave up three runs in three innings in the loss.
Dylan Godwin, Cameron Easterling, Miles Powell and Rob Jones all pitched in relief of Joyner in the loss.
While East Brewton was held scoreless throughout the game, Opp scored three runs in the second inning and five runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to claim the 13-0 win in six innings.
East Brewton had their chances to score in the game as they had runners on second and third in the fifth inning with one out but failed to score.
Cameron Easterling was hit by a pitch and Tyler Joyner reached on an error in the inning.
In the fifth inning, Alex O'Keane got on base in the inning due to a walk and a stolen base but was unable to score.
East Brewton was set to play Brewton, who lost to Andalusia 13-2 Monday, on Tuesday at 8 p.m. due to games on Sunday being canceled due to rain.
See Sunday's edition of the Brewton Standard for stats and game stories from those games.
