The outcome of Tuesday's runoff election for Brewton City Council District 5 brought new blood to the council table.
As polls closed, the final tally of what officials called a “surprising” voter turnout cinched a win for Fred Barton.
Barton received 192 votes, while his opponent Terrence Breckenridge pulled in 140 votes.
Barton said his intentions now are to work for the betterment of everyone in his district and in the city.
Barton also expressed gratitude to his opponent in the race.
Poll numbers indicated a larger-than-expected turnout for a runoff election.
With 761 registered voters in the district, 332 votes were cast bringing the number of voters to 44 percent for this election.
Barton will take office Nov. 3 along with other newly elected councilmen Dennis Dunaway and Joseph Nathan Watson.
