While many retailers across the nation are posting revenue losses of up to 6.6 percent, Brewton and East Brewton retailers are falling well below that amount with a less than 2 percent decline in sales.
In East Brewton, the numbers are pretty much the same.
Clark said the top retailer in East Brewton continues to be Magnolia Superfoods.
In Brewton, a giant discount retailer is providing a large portion of tax revenue for the city, Angel said.
Also among the top revenue producers for Brewton are Georgia Pacific, Pic N Sav, Winn-Dixie and Marvin’s, respectively, Angel said.
With sales tax revenue the main source of income for any small town, East Brewton is faced with the same obstacles as Brewton.
Although Clark said the danger of losing or reducing services in East Brewton aren’t even being considered, some things may have to change if things continue to decline.
With the retail offerings in Brewton and East Brewton, discount chains may be what is keeping the local economy in a positive mode.
National indicators show discount markets are holding steady or showing a slight increase in sales. Walmart in Brewton and Fred’s in East Brewton fall into that discount store category.
