Recently at W.S. Neal High School the head football coach/athletic director, Coach Blaine Hathcock resigned to take a position at Haleyville High and assistant principal at their middle school. No one can blame anyone for moving on for bigger opportunities.
I think I can speak for many Eagle fans and alums when I say that Coach Hathcock has done a good job while he has been here. So, let me say thank you to Coach Hathcock.
A few years back we had Coach Shane Smothers as head coach/athletic director and after a few years he left for a bigger opportunity.
Now if we look within the stem there is a perfect candidate for the position that is currently serving as the head coach at W.S. Neal Middle School.
Coach Buck Quarles has served on the varsity staff before and has been an assistant at several other schools. He has also served as head coach at Holtville High school.
Coach Quarles is a great fit because he is rooted in Escambia County and is familiar with If he should be given the job this would bring stability to our program. The last two seasons his teams have had a combine record of 14-2.
He also has a great defensive coordinator in Chuck Phillips who would be a great asset to the varsity team.
Now I’m only one voice but I feel they would help our team tremendously. I was honored to be a volunteer assistant coach for one season under Coach Quarles. I was honored to be part of a team that was 7-1 overall.
It brings me great pride to be an Eagle alum. When the board, the superintendent and principal make the decision on who the next head coach/athletic director should be, Coach Quarles should be strongly considered.
