Mr. John Wesley died Saturday, July 11, 2009. He was a native of Brewton. After graduating from Southern Normal School, he joined the U.S. Army. He was a resident of Jersey City N.J. where he worked with Western Electric. He returned to Brewton in 1984 and became active in the community. He was treasurer of the Alabama Democratic Conference Brewton Precinct and vice president of the Brewton Sportsman Club. He was preceded in death by his father, Bennett Stewart; his mother, Eula Mae Stewart; a sister, Bennie Mae Howard and a nephew, Cary Stewart.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Stewart; two nieces, Clare White and Sheila (Samuel) Cunningham; one nephew, Bruce Stewart; six great-nieces, Canisha Stewart, Nicole Campbell, Ebony Howard, Sanquey Stewart, Stephanie McCoy and Emonee Howard; 11 great-great nieces and nephews; a very special friend, Ella Smith of Memphis, Tenn.; and a host of other friends and relatives.
Funeral services were held Saturday, July 18, at 11 a.m. at Baptist Hill Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Eric Andrews officiating. Burial followed at Baptist Hill Cemetery with Presley-Fluker Funeral Home directing.
