Four Brewton residents remain hospitalized after an horrific accident Friday evening near the Boykin community on U.S. 29.

Harold Eugene Kennedy, 58, of Brewton was injured when his 1991 Ford was involved in a collision with a 2000 Toyota driven by Homer Aaron “Rock” Herbert, 24, also of Brewton.

Myah Kathleen Gillis, 27, and Jaybaras Armstrong, 4, both of Brewton, were passengers in Herbert’s vehicle. They were also injured in the collision.

Each of the victims was taken by air to hospitals outside of Brewton to be treated for injuries sustained in the accident.

Herbert was taken to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, as was Armstrong. Gillis was airlifted to U.S.A. Medical Center in Mobile while Herbert was airlifted to Baptist Hospital in Pensacola.

Gillis’ family members say she and the 4-year-old are both still listed in critical conditions at the medical facilities where they are being treated.

Gillis’ grandmother, Georgia Lanier, is also the great-grandmother of the young boy involved in the accident.

“Jay is still on life-support,” Lanier said Monday. “They have taken the pressure gauge from his head, which is a very good sign. He still needs help with his breathing. He is still in critical condition.”

Lanier said Gillis also remains in critical condition with several broken bones and bruising.

“Myah is still in critical condition and it’s not good today,” Lanier said. “When she was taken in she had broken bones in both legs, some cracked ribs, some broken bones in her hand and a couple of spots on her brain that were bleeding. They have gotten the bleeding to stop but they are also keeping her sedated while they treat her.”

Lanier said the extensive injuries received by Gillis will require extensive time for healing.“She has had surgery and they have put rods in both legs,” Lanier said. “She is going to have a long way to go to recover.”

Lanier said physicians are keeping Gillis sedated and are treating her for a severe concussion.

Herbert has also had surgery for injuries sustained in the incident. Reports say he has had surgery for a broken hip socket and is recovering in fair condition.

Kennedy remains in Baptist Hospital in Pensacola, Fla., where he is a patient in the surgical intensive care unit. No other details on his condition or the extent of his injuries have been made available.
