Blueberry Drop set for Friday night

Residents around the Brewton area will have an opportunity to join with friends and neighbors to ring in the New Year at Burnt Corn Creek Park near downtown.
The annual Blueberry Drop will be held at the park located at the intersection of St. Nicholas Avenue and Persimmon Street beginning at 9:30 p.m.
Brewton City Clerk John Angel said plans for this year’s event have seen some changes due to economic circumstances felt by the city.
“We cut back some last year on the expenses for the Blueberry Drop,” Angel said. “We’ve had to do some more cutting this year.”
In years past, the City of Brewton has hosted the event complete with a live band entertaining revelers for the evening. Angel said expenses were cut by choosing a live DJ instead of a performance group for this year’s party.
“Instead of a band this year we will have a local DJ,” Angel said. “Mark Miller with LA Sound will provide music beginning at 9:30 p.m.”
With an evening of dancing in the park and mingling with other residents in the area, revelers will have a chance to count down the New Year arrival which will be marked with the dropping of the blueberries, Angel said.
“At midnight, the blueberry will drop to mark the New Year,” Angel said. “Weather permitting, we will have fireworks that will go off right after the drop. Patriotic music will be played during the fireworks display.”
As of press time, Angel said he was unaware of any group or organization that will have refreshments available for the event. For additional information concerning the annual Blueberry Drop contact Brewton City Hall.
