TRM tennis falls at sectionals

Both the T.R. Miller boys and girls tennis teams competed a sectionals Monday and Tuesday in Mobile.
The boys team racked up 10 points while the girls scored 20.
For the boys, T.R. Miller’s No. 1 seed Nick Dorso advanced to the finals before losing to Bayside Academy 6-0 and 6-1.
Dorso won his first round match over Opp 10-2 and claimed a second round win over Cottage Hill 10-4.
No. 2 seed Taylor Terry won in the first round over Saint Luke 10-3 before falling to Bayside in round two 10-2.
T.R. Miller’s No. 3 seed Michael Kast lost his first round match to Cottage Hill 10-4 while No. 4 seed Patrick Weaver won in the first round over Opp 10-7, but lost in round two to Bayside 10-2.
William Jones, No. 5 seed, lost to Cottage Hill in round one 10-2 while No. 6 seed Edward Hines won in round one 10-5 but lost to Bayside Academy in round two 10-4.
In doubles, Kast and Dorso lost in round one to Houston Academy 10-8 while No. 2 doubles Terry and Jones lost to Bayside in round one 10-1.
The No. 3 doubles duo of Weaver and Malik Leach lost in round one to Providence 10-8.
For the Lady Tigers, No. 1 seed Leferria Hetherington lost her round one match to Bayside while No. 2 seed Elizabeth Nelson won in round one 10-8 before losing in round two to Providence 10-4.
In No. 3 singles, DeAundra Hetherington won in round one to Saint Lukes 10-2 and defeated Houston Academy in round two 10-4 before losing to Providence in the finals 6-4 and 6-2.
In No. 4 singles, Laura Burkett won round one over Saint Lukes 10-7 and took round two over Cottage Hill 10-5. Burkett lost in the finals to Providence 6-3 and 6-2.
In No. 5 singles, Abbie Carlson won in round one 10-4 over Saint Lukes and lost in round two to Bayside Academy 10-3.
Whitney Nicholson, No. 6 singles, won her first round match with Saint Lukes 10-1 before losing in round two to Providence 10-2.
In doubles play, the Hetherington duo won in round one 10-4 over Saint Lukes but lost in round two to Bayside 10-0.
In No. 2 doubles, Nelson and Carlson lost in the first round to Houston Academy 10-3 while the No. 3 doubles Burkett and Nicholson won round one over Opp 10-3, but lost round two to Providence 10-1.
“No T.R. Miller tennis team ever gave a better effort than this year’s team,” T.R. Miller tennis coach Paul Smith said. “The competition was very strong and this team battled in every match. Nick Dorso, Deaundra Hetherington and Laura Burkett all reached the finals. The teams played well and they played great.”
