Saundra Woolen points out her daughter Tamara Thurman's name on a memorial flag created to honor Sept. 11 victims.

Under a sky as cloudless and blue as the one over New York on Sept. 11, 2001, Brewton area firefighters, police and residents gathered to remember those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks that day.

On hand were the families of Tamara Thurman, a W.S. Neal graduate who died at the Pentagon, and Allan Tarasiewicz, a first responder who died at the World Trade Center and whose aunt and uncle live in Brewton.

Brewton Fire Chief Lawrence Weaver said those lost are “heroes.”

“Heroes are the people who do what needs to be done,” he said.

Brewton will continue its commemoration of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks with a free concert at 6 p.m. Sunday at Jefferson Davis Community College’s auditorium. The concert will be performed by a nearly 100-voice community choir. It is free and open to the public.
