Opportunity to help bountiful

As a close-knit community, residents of Brewton and East Brewton have good opportunities to help their fellow man this week.
Friday morning will find volunteers working to build a home for a deserving family in hopes of giving them a special gift this holiday.
Habitat for Humanity of Escambia County will begin construction of a home on Mayo Street in East Brewton by raising the walls of the home intended for the Thompson family.
With plans to have the home completed in time for Christmas, volunteers will be needed throughout the coming weeks.
Construction will continue throughout the weekend to give the home a great start. Friday’s kick-off will begin at 8 a.m. with an 8 a.m. start planned for work on Saturday. Sunday’s work will begin at 1 p.m.
We encourage anyone who can hold a hammer or screwdriver to don an apron and join Habitat organizers and volunteers in helping make this “home for the holidays” a reality for the Thompson family.
A second opportunity to help our fellow man will come on Saturday in the form of a special 5K run to benefit the Yancey Jernigan Foundation — a foundation aimed at assisting Escambia County residents who are battling cancer.
The run, which is set for Saturday at 8 a.m., will begin at the Brewton YMCA facility on Belleville Avenue. The marked, flat route will wind through the neighborhoods near the facility.
Whether you swing a hammer or put on your running shoes, getting out this week will give you a chance to make a difference in the lives of those around you — and help yourself, too.
