After starting their season 0-3, the Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawk basketball team has recently reeled off three straight wins to even their record at 3-3.
JDCC started their season with a road loss to Pensacola State and followed that loss with a home loss to Pensacola Christian and a road loss to Southern Union.
JDCC got revenge on Pensacola later at home to get their first win of the season and picked up two wins Wednesday and Thursday at the TCC Basketball Thanksgiving Classic in Tallahassee to even their record at 3-3.
In the Classic, JDCC defeated Miami Dade Wednesday 74-68 to improve their record to 2-3 and followed suit Thursday with a 77-71 win over Catawba Valley Community College.
“The kids got some confidence from beating what would have been No.22 in the country Pensacola State and it carried over to the tournament games,” JDCC head coach Allen Gainer said. “Against Miami Dade, the game started with us down 30-10 with three minutes to go in the first half. From that point on, we outscored them 13-2 to end the half (32-23 halftime score) and 15-5 to start the second half to take a one-point lead with 15 minutes to go. The lead seesawed back and forth for the rest of the game but we were able to create some turnovers down the stretch that pulled it out forcing Miami-Dade into 27 turnovers.”
Gainer said the exact opposite game happened with Catawba Valley from North Carolina.
“We jumped out to a 6-0, and 10-4 lead only to see them tie us at 10,” Gainer said. “We pulled back out to a 41-31 lead, but let them go on a run to end the half at 45-40. We came out on fire to start the second half and pushed our lead up to 67-47 with 10 minutes to go. Catawba then made a run to pull within 72-70 with a minute to go and missed an open 3-pointer that would have given them the lead. We hit free throws down the stretch and got a break away lay up as time expired to win 77-71.”
JDCC will be back in action Tuesday as they travel to Montgomery to take on Huntingdon JV at 7:30 p.m.
The Warhawks will return home Saturday, Dec. 3 against Gadsden. Game time is set for 3 p.m. in Brewton at Warhawk Gym.
