Jordan Creel came to Jefferson Davis to play baseball from Alabama Christian High School in Montgomery, where he played for Coach Don Gilliam and the
Eagles. After success on the diamond here in Brewton, Creel will be heading to Stillman College to further along his baseball years.
Creel said what brought him to JDCC was the fact that he wanted to continue his baseball career but at the same time get a college degree.
“I have been playing baseball since I was either 3 or 4,” he said. “What I have been told is that I took my brother’s bat and just never put it down. I feel like I just wouldn’t be content at all just going to college and not playing ball. I feel extremely blessed to have a four-year offer at such a good school and am looking forward to the experience.”
Creel said his plans as of now are to play out the rest of his scholarship for JDCC and hopefully finish out at Stillman.
“Who knows what could happen from there,” he said. “As of right now my plans for my major is to get a degree in physical therapy and minor in accounting. Playing baseball to me is just a means of having fun while in school but also pursuing a lifelong love.
“I am just thankful for having the opportunity.”
JDCC head baseball coach Darrell Blevins said he has enjoyed having Creel on his team.
“It has been a pleasure to watch this young man mature both on and off the field, since arriving at Jeff Davis two years ago,” Blevins said. “He will be a really good player for coach Crawford at Stillman where he is to move to left field.
“I look forward to watching him this spring and seeing just how much he has matured, and how much the maturity makes him an even better player for us.”
Blevins said Creel’s speed was what attracted him to pursue him to come to JDCC.
“An outstanding high school player, our interest was peaked when we saw how aggressive he was at the plate and how fast he was as a runner,” Blevins said of Creel. “He is a 6.6 second, 60 yard dash runner. Once we really began watching closely, it was obvious that he had the potential to be a good player.”
As a freshman for JDCC, Creel played in 48 of the 50 baseball games as the starting centerfielder and compiled a .321 batting average over 134 at-bats on the season.
“He was the third leading hitter for JDCC last season behind Lee Hunter’s .336, and Brandon Blackwelder’s .325.
“Jordan has shown that he has a very good eye for the strike zone which allowed him to gain an additional 20 base on balls (walks) for the team,” Blevins said. “Once on base, he has the base stealing speed to really help our club. Last season he led our team in stolen bases where he stole 19 of 20 bases on the year.”
Blevins said as a sophomore, Creel really turned into a leader for the Warhawks.
“He is constantly working on all aspects of his game whether it be his swing or his throwing mechanics from the outfield,” Blevins said.
Creel is the third JDCC baseball player to sign a scholarship in the recent weeks.
Creel joins Jeremy Barnes and Corey Thompson as Warhawks who have signed to play at the four-year level.
Barnes and Creel will be heading to Stillman College located in Tuscaloosa and Thompson will play at Brewton-Parker College, located in Georgia.
