Warhawk basketball falls at home to Southern Union

In their first game since Dec. 10, the Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawk basketball team lost a 13-point decision to the Southern Union Bison Friday at home 70-57.
The Warhawks were outscored 32-26 in the first half and fell by seven points in the second half, 38-31, to take the loss. With the loss, JDCC dropped their second straight game to fall to 6-5 overall this season.
“We beat ourselves,” JDCC head coach Allen Gainer said. “We didn’t take smart shots. We turned the ball over. We didn’t run back on defense. I don’t know how many points they made on breakaway lay ups. We had our post players shooting 3s and our guards trying to post up. We just looked like the first game coming back after Christmas. We didn’t play smart and we didn’t play very hard.”
Brandon Scott led the Warhawks in the loss with 18 points and Gabriel Rice added 13 points. Turmonte Ragland added nine points in the loss and Larel Jackson chipped in seven points.
D.J. Jackson had five points and Sherman Presswood had four. Greg Crum had one point in the loss for the Warhawks.
D.J. Jackson added eight rebounds and Scott had seven. Rice had five and Larel Jackson finished with four. Ragland and Crum both had three rebounds each in the loss while Jermaine Williams and Presswood had one. Larel Jackson finished with eight assists and D.J. Jackson and Rice had two blocks each.
Larel Jackson finished with four steals to lead the Warhawks.
Southern Union scored the first two points of the game only to see the Warhawks tie the game at 2-2 with 19:15 left in the first half. Following a 5-2 lead for the Bison, JDCC would go on a 7-0 run to take a 9-5 lead with 16:34 left to play.
The Warhawks could claim a 16-13 lead with 11:39 left to play but Southern Union would tie the game at the 11:27 mark.
Following an 18-16 Warhawk lead with 11:04 left to play in the first half, JDCC would fall to a 7-0 run to fall behind 23-18 with 5:59 left.
JDCC would not score again until the 5:46 mark as Southern Union led 32-26 at the half.
Trailing 34-28 with 19:25 left in the game, JDCC would go on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 34 with 16:04 left to play.
The Warhawks would go on and take a 39-38 lead over Southern Union with 14:29 left following a dunk by Rice.
From that point, Southern Union went on an 8-0 run to take a 46-39 lead with 12:23 left in the game.
The Bison would take a 13-point lead over the Warhawks at the 3:23 mark of the game as they lead 65-52.
This came after JDCC cut the lead to four points twice—52-48 at the 6:37 mark and 55-51 at the 5:34 point of the game.
Trailing by 13, the closest JDCC would come would be their final points of the game at the 1:15 mark to cut the lead to 68-57 as Southern Union would get the win by 13 points.
JDCC shot 11-for-19 from the free throw line in the loss. The Warhawks were 4-for-5 in the first half and 7-for-14 in the second while the Bison shot 8-for-12 in the game with all coming in the second half.
JDCC was scheduled to be back in action Monday in Monroeville as they take on Alabama Southern Community College. The game Monday is the first conference game for the Eagles.
JDCC will be back in action Thursday at home as they are scheduled to take on LBW in Brewton at 7 p.m.
