The Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawk basketball team saw their three-game winning streak come to an end Monday at Faulkner State as they lost 74-69.
The loss dropped the Warhawks to 11-7 overall and to 5-2 in conference play.
“Faulkner hit two free throws with .8 left for the final margin, so it was really a one possession game,” JDCC head coach Allen Gainer said. “We got down as much as 13, but fought back and just ran out of time. I think Faulkner’s big game experience was the difference in the early part of the game. We only scored two points in about the first eight minutes.”
Faulkner State led the Warhawks by four points after the first half, 32-28, and outscored JDCC 42-41 in the second half to get the win by five.
JDCC had three players score in double figures in the loss Monday. Sherman Presswood led the Warhawks with 18 points and was followed by Turmonte Ragland who finished with 16 points. Greg Crum added 11 points for JDCC.
Gabriel Rice had seven points and Brandon Scott had six. R.J. Bowers finished with five and Larel Jackson added four. D.J. Jackson rounded out the Warhawk scorers with two points.
Ragland led the team with nine rebounds and Larel Jackson led with four assists. Crum led with one block and Ragland led with five steals.
The Warhawks shot 44 percent from the field and 13 percent from the 3-point area. The Warhawks were 16-for-25 from the free throw line for 64 percent. Faulkner was 20-for-30 from the free throw line for 67 percent. Faulkner shot 45 percent from the field in the win and 15 percent from the 3-point area.
JDCC will play at home Thursday against Alabama Southern in a “big” conference game according to Gainer. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Brewton.
