Facing off against the LBW Saints Saturday at home, the Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawk baseball team came away with a split.
JDCC lost game one 9-1 but regrouped in game two to win 3-0 to get the split. With the split, JDCC saw their record improve to 11-14 overall and to 3-5 in conference play.
“We dropped game one 9-1 by giving up two big innings where LBW was able to push four runs across in each inning, JDCC head coach Darrell Blevins said. “We had a good starting pitching performance by freshman right-handed pitcher John Williams. We just could not overcome three big errors which allowed for the two four-run innings.”
In game two, Blevins said Corey Thompson led the way by pitching six complete innings of shutout baseball before giving way to Michael Yarborough in the seventh who
would seal the victory.
“I am extremely proud of our club with the way they handled themselves mentally and emotionally,” Blevins said. “Game one was tough in that we couldn’t get or make a break to get back into the game after giving up the first big inning. Seemed like everything we tried backfired. However, our squad did not feel sorry for themselves and went back out in game two and just played their hearts out. Through 4 ½ innings of play, both teams were carrying a one-hit shutout into the bottom of the fifth when we were able to push three runs across. They really showed a tremendous amount of character and competitiveness.”
JDCC was scheduled to travel to Monroeville on Tuesday for a double-header versus Alabama Southern. JDCC will be back at home Wednesday at 1 p.m. against Mineral Area Community College.
