TRM teams swept in regular season finale at Hillcrest

In their final regular season games of the 2012-2013 season, all three T.R. Miller Tiger basketball teams took road losses at the hands of the Hillcrest Jaguars.
The Tiger B-team took a 46-28 loss to finish their season 2-8. The Lady Tigers took a 52-24 loss to finish their regular season with a 3-16 record while the varsity Tigers lost 73-56 to end their regular season with a 2-14 record.
The Lady Tigers and varsity Tigers will play in their area tournaments Thursday and Friday.
The Lady Tigers will travel to Cottage Hill Thursday to take on the Lady Admirals of Bayside Academy at 4:30 p.m. The varsity Tigers will travel to Bayside Academy Friday and take on Bayside at 6 p.m.
The Lady Tigers of T.R. Miller finished as the No. 3 seed in area play this season while the varsity Eagles took the No. 4 seed. With a win Thursday, the Lady Tigers will take on the W.S. Neal/Cottage Hill winner at 3 p.m. Saturday for the area championship. If the varsity Tigers win their game Friday, they will play the W.S. Neal/Cottage Hill winner for the area championship Monday at 6 p.m.
Hillcrest 46, TRM B-team 28
The T.R. Miller B-team ended their season on a six-game losing streak Friday as the Hillcrest Jaguars ended the Tigers’ season with an 18-point loss, 46-28.
The Jaguars started the game on a 17-4 run in the first quarter to help propel them to the win. Leading by 13 after one quarter, T.R. Miller rallied briefly in the second quarter with a 9-7 advantage to cut the lead to 24-13 at the half.
Trailing by 11 points at the half, Hillcrest increased their lead to 38-24 heading into the fourth quarter after outscoring T.R. Miller 14-11 in the third. In the final quarter, the Tigers were outscored 8-4 and took the loss by 18 points.
Carlos Thomas led with 10 points while Alex Daugherty and Markail Mitchell had five points each. Michael Woods and Trin Miller had three points each and Tamerick Jenkins had two points.
Hillcrest 52, TRM Lady Tigers 24
Hillcrest held T.R. Miller scoreless in the first quarter and to only two points in the first half to cruise their way to an 18-point win, 52-24.
Hillcrest led T.R. Miller 14-0 after one quarter and 28-2 at the half. The Lady Tigers got their offense rolling in the third quarter as they poured in 16 points, but Hillcrest poured in 21 of their own to increase their lead to 49-18 heading to the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, the Lady Tigers doubled up Hillcrest 6-3, but took the loss by 18.
Sha Nicholson led T.R. Miller with eight points and Lateysia Montgomery chipped in six points. O’Nesha Hall had five points while Mekia Williams and Emonae Curry had two points each. Steely Ruzic had one point in the loss.
Hillcrest 73, TRM varsity Tigers 56
The T.R. Miller varsity Tigers could not hold a first quarter lead Friday night at Hillcrest as they Jaguars came away with a 17-point win, 73-56.
The Tigers of T.R. Miller led Hillcrest 14-9 after one quarter but was edged out in the second quarter 19-11 to go from a five-point lead to a three-point deficit at the half.
In the third quarter, Hillcrest increased their lead by five points as they edged out the Tigers 15-10 in the quarter to take a 43-35 leading into the fourth quarter.
In the fourth, Hillcrest ended the game on a 30-21 run to get the win by 17 points.
“We battled for 3 ½ quarters,” T.R. Miller varsity Tiger head coach Juan Johnson said. “We just couldn’t quite make enough plays down the stretch.”
Chardian Johnson led the Tigers in the loss with 16 points while Caleb Hubbard had 12. Trae Walker joined in double figures with 10 while David Barragan had seven, Caden Lodge had six and Kellyn Winn had five points.
