Mr. Robert Washington, 86, died Sunday, May 12, died in a hospice in Pensacola, Fla. He was a native of Pollard, and a two time veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was employed by Hines Realty Company for many years until his retirement. He was a member of St. Peter’s Church, a 40 year member of the Pollard Lodge and 15 year veteran of Progressive Lodge 943. He served eight years on the Pollard Town Council and a long time member of the Alabama Democratic Conference. He was married to Ellis Estell Mitchell and he was preceded in death by his parents, George Washington and Bridget Dowell Washington; five brothers and two sisters.
He is survived by a daughter, Mary Washington Harden of Pollard; two grandchildren, William Harden Jr. and Carol Harden, both of Birmingham; three brothers, Aubrey Washington of Brooklyn, N.Y., Charles Washington of Brewton, and Richard Washington of Bratt, Fla.; four brothers-in-law, George Tolliver of Pollard, Carl Mitchell of Century, Fla., John Davis Mitchell of Magnolia, Miss., and Willie George (Jean) Mitchell of Quebec, Canada; three sisters-in-law, Alice Nathan of Los Angeles, Calif., Mary Frances (Jesse) Gardner of Columbus, Miss., and Hattie Mae (Caesar) Lett of Brooklyn, N.Y.; devoted friends, William Harden Jr., Alfonzo Wesley, Charles (Ethel) Likely; the Hart family; a great-niece, Katrina Dixon and a host of other friends and relatives.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 18, at 2 p.m. at St. Peter’s Missionary Baptist Church in Pollard with Pastor Willie F. Osby officiating. Burial followed at Pollard Cemetery with Christian Memorial Chapel Funeral Home directing.
