Advanced Babe Ruth: Brewton Dawgs splits with Covington County

Brewton’s Advanced Babe Ruth team earned a split with Covington County Blue in their first home game of the season Tuesday night. The Dawgs used a walk off single by Tyler Reid and the no-hit pitching of Kevin Davis to get a 1-0 win in game one. In game two, Brewton committed nine errors and took a 6-3 loss.
In game one, both teams were held off the scoreboard until the bottom of the fifth inning when Reid singled to score Zac Griffin and give the Dawgs a 1-0 win.
Along with Reid’s game-winning RBI single, Tyler Peebles had a single along with Jacob Fillmore and Griffin. Kevin Davis had a double.
While Reid had the game-winning hit and RBI, Davis went the complete game five innings on the mound and allowed no runs, no hits, walked and hit one batter while striking out 11.
In game two, Covington County scored in every inning including three runs each in the third and fifth innings to propel them to a 9-3 win over Brewton and capture a split. Along with runs in every inning, Covington County pounded out 10 hits and Brewton committed nine errors in the loss.
Ryan Hunt took the loss on the mound for Brewton as he went three innings and allowed seven hits, five runs, walked none, struck out two and hit one. Fillmore went the final two innings and allowed three hits, four runs, walked none, struck out four and hit one.
At the plate for Brewton, Darby Black led with two doubles while Caleb Dickey had a double and a single. Griffin had a double and one RBI while Peebles had two singles. Reid added a single and Davis had one RBI.
Brewton scored one run in the second inning and two in the third.
Covington County Tournament:
Brewton 7, Covington County 3 (nine innings)
Tyler Joyner threw five innings and gave up one run on four hits as Brewton defeated Covington County 7-3 in nine innings.
Brewton led 2-1 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but after back-to-back triples by Covington County, the game was tied 2-2 and headed to extra innings.
In the top of the ninth, Brewton scored five runs to take control of the game and gave up one run in the bottom of the ninth to secure the victory.
Hunt came on in relief of Joyner and gave up two runs on five hits in four innings of work. Dickey had two hits, Brandon Carmichael knocked in two with a bases loaded double, Peebles also had a double for Brewton, while Caden Lodge, Ryan Gray, Joyner, and Griffin added singles.
Brewton 7, Greenville 6
In their second game of the tournament, Brewton edged Greenville 7-6.
Peebles pitched a complete game giving up six runs (three earned) on seven hits. Lodge and Griffin each had two hits while Dickey, Darby Black, Peebles, and Taylor Elliot all chipped in with singles for the victory.
Brewton 7, Butler County 5
In their final game of the day, Brewton defeated Butler county 7-5.
Lodge pitched five strong innings, giving up two runs before giving way to Elliot who gave up three (one earned) runs in two innings of relief work.
Lodge and Dickey both had a double and single for the winners with Elliot, Griffin, and Black all having singles.
The Brewton Dawgs went 1-1 in a recent tournament at Tate High School in Florida before getting rained out on Sunday. No stats or information was known as of press time.
The Dawgs overall record now after Tuesday’s split is 6-3.
Brewton will play in the Mobile Invitational held at Matthews Park Saturday at 11 a.m. No other game times were given as of press time.
The next home game for Brewton will be Thursday, June 27 at 6 p.m. against Covington County. The game will be played at T.R. Miller High School’s baseball field in Brewton.
