Clarence Edward Smith

Mr. Clarence Edward Smith, 69, of Brewton, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at his home after a long battle with follicular-lymphoma. He was of the Baptist faith. and a native of Escambia County, living the majority of his life in the Riverview community of Brewton. He graduated from W.S. Neal High School in 1962 and joined the United States Army. He served from 1962-1965 in El Paso, Texas and in West Germany as an E-5. After serving his military term, he moved back to Brewton and attended Jefferson Davis Community College where he received his associates of arts degree in 1969. In 1972 he earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from the University of West Florida. Later in 1993, he also received his master’s degree in business administration from the University of West Florida. He later retired from AT&T and operated Smith’s CB Repair Shop for many years. He was devoted to his community, as well as his family and served for many years as a member of the City of Riverview’s town council.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Everett Smith and Iva Lee Jernigan Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Williamson Smith of Brewton; one son, Edward Keith (Robbie) Smith of Tuscaloosa; one daughter, Darlene Smith (Marcus) Chavers of Brewton; two grandchildren-Zachary Guy (Lauren) Boatwright, Rebecca Leigh Chavers; and one great- granddaughter, Kairi Jade Boatwright.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, Oct. 1, at 11 a.m. at Zion Hill Cemetery with Elder Tommy Jernigan and Elder Sharon Jernigan officiating. Interment followed in Zion Hill Cemetery, with Williams Memorial Chapel Funeral Home of Brewton in charge of arrangements.
