JDCC baseball begins season with win over Marion Military

In their first game of the 2014 season Saturday at home against Marion Military Institute, the Jefferson Davis Community College Warhawk baseball team picked up a 7-3 win over the Tigers to start their season 1-0.
In the 7-3 win for the Warhawks over MMI Saturday, Roman Donofro grabbed the win on the mound in relief of starting pitcher Trey Marshall.
Marshall went the first three innings of the game and allowed two hits, one earned run, walked three and struck out four.
After Marshall exited the game with the score tied at 1-1, Donofro went the next three innings and allowed five hits, two earned runs, walked none and struck out three.
Nick Helton entered the game in the top of the seventh inning with the Warhawks leading 4-3 and went the final three innings. Helton allowed four hits, no runs, walked none and struck out five.
At the plate for JDCC, Alex Jones led in the win with three hits and three RBIs. Jones had a double and a two-run homerun in the fifth inning to give JDCC a 3-2 lead.
Hunter Myrick added a double and two RBIs while Matthew Holmes had a double and went 3-for-5 at the plate.
John-Mark Cosby added two hits and one RBI while Taylor Baynes went 1-for-4 at the plate.
Greg Ciangiotto went 1-for-2 at the plate and Cameron Davis had one RBI for the Warhawks in the win.
MMI struck first in the game with one run in the second inning. After JDCC tied the game at 1-all in the third, MMI took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth. From there, Jones’ homerun gave JDCC a 3-2 lead after five innings. In the top of the sixth, the Tigers tied the game a 3-all. From that point, JDCC scored four unanswered runs in the game to get the win by four.
The Warhawks added on run in the sixth, two in the seventh and one more in the eighth to get their first win of the season in their season opener.
Sunday: CVCC 6, JDCC 5 (14 innings)
On Sunday, JDCC traveled to Chattahoochee Valley and took a 6-5 loss in 14 innings to fall to 1-1 overall. The game was postponed from Friday.
In the game Sunday, JDCC led 1-0 after one inning and 3-1 after three innings of play. The Warhawks would later build a 4-1 lead in the top of the sixth inning before seeing CVCC cut the lead to 4-3 in the seventh and tie the game at 4-4 in the ninth.
Forced to play extra innings, neither teams scored in the first three innings. In the top of the 14th inning, JDCC plated one run to grab a 5-4 lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, CVCC scored two runs to grab the win by one run.
No other stats from Sunday’s game was known as of press time.
JDCC is scheduled to play at Northwest Florida State Tuesday at 3 p.m. in a nine inning game before returning home Wednesday to play Pensacola State. Game time is set for 1 p.m. and will also be nine innings.
The Warhawks will also be back in action at home on Saturday when they host Mississippi Gulf Coast in a noon doubleheader.
