No. 1-ranked UMS-Wright sweeps WSN baseball in area DH Thursday

No. 1-ranked UMS-Wright finished off an area sweep of W.S. Neal Thursday in East Brewton to drop the Eagles to 7-8 overall and to 0-2 in area play.
In game one Thursday in East Brewton, UMS-Wright defeated the Eagles 12-3. In game two, the Bulldogs won 9-5.
UMS-Wright hit six total homeruns in the two-game series Thursday with one being a grand slam.
Game one: UMS-Wright 12, WSN varsity 3
UMS-Wright built a 9-0 lead over W.S. Neal after the top of the fourth inning and cruised to a 12-3 win over the Eagles.
Leading WSN 1-0 after one inning and 4-0 after three innings, UMS added five in the fourth to take the 9-0 run lead. WSN added two in the bottom of the inning, but the Bulldogs plated two more in the fifth and one in the seventh to lead 12-2. WSN’s final run came in the bottom of the inning.
Jared Cooper took the loss on the mound as he went 3 2/3 innings and allowed five hits, nine runs, eight earned, walked six and struck out four while hitting two batters.
Matt Hutchins went the final 3 1/3 innings and allowed five hits, three earned runs, walked and struck out one.
At the plate for WSN, Miles Powell led with a homerun and two RBIs. Lane Chavers, Dalton Shell and Hutchins all added one hit each while Shell and Hutchins having a double each. Malcolm Hawthorne went 2-for-4.
Game two: UMS-Wright 9, WSN 5
In game two, UMS-Wright’s Troy Dixon cranked out two homeruns to give UMS a 9-5 win.
UMS led WSN 2-0 after one inning and added three in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead. After WSN cut the lead t0 7-5 in the fifth, the Bulldogs added two in the sixth to get the win by four.
Shell, Jacobey Hawthorne and Alex O’Keane all pitched with Shell taking the loss.
The trio went seven innings and allowed 10 hits, nine runs, seven earned, walked five, struck out nine and hit two batters.
For WSN, Malcolm Hawthorne went 2-for-4 with a homerun and two RBIs.
Rob Jones, Chavers and Shell all had one hit each. Chavers had a doubles in the loss. Sam Frazier and Shell had one RBI each for WSN.
