TRM baseball pounds out 18 hits to move one win closer to area title

The No. 6-ranked T.R. Miller Tigers became one win away from their second straight area title Thursday as they routed the Opp Bobcats 15-5 in Opp. The win moved TRM to 12-1 overall and to 3-0 in area play.
The two teams played to a 1-all tie after one inning before TRM used two runs in the second inning and two more in the fourth to build a 5-1 lead. After Opp cut the lead to 5-3 in the fourth, TRM added one in the fifth, two in the sixth and seven in the seventh to build a 15-3 lead. Opp’s final two runs came in the bottom of the seventh, but the Tigers were able to hang on for the 10-run win.
TRM pounded out 18 hits in the win including three each from Jones Manning, Tripp Floyd, JoJo Booker and Jordan Williams. Drew Williamson had four hits for the Tigers.
Manning and Williamson had a double each while Floyd had a triple.
Tim McDonald and Chris Jones had one each for the Tigers.
Floyd and Williamson both had two RBIs while Booker and Jones had three each. Hunter Brittain, Caleb Winton and Stokes Jennings all had one RBI each.
Floyd started the game on the mound for TRM and got the win as he went five innings and allowed two hits, three runs, two earned, walked five, hit one and struck out nine.
Russell Smith went the final two innings and allowed two hits, two runs, none earned, walked two and struck out none.
TRM is scheduled to host Opp Friday at home at 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. TRM needs one win to win the area championship.
