Bethea helps others reach potential
One glance at Peyton Bethea shows how important fitness is to the Brewton resident, but what many may not realize is that she is willing and ready to help get everyone on a path to healthy living.
For nearly two decades, Bethea has worked as a personal trainer and fitness instructor at the Brewton YMCA. As part of those duties, she helps new members get “orientated” to the happenings at the Y.
“Sometimes for people who aren’t familiar with a gym and what the machines can do, the thought of starting at the Y is intimidating,” said Brandee Chase, Y member service director. “That’s where Peyton comes in.”
Bethea, who has taught water aerobics for the last 17 years, said she loves the way exercise makes her feel. Bethea also teaches the “Wise and Well” class which helps those with joint issues and limited movement work on strength training.
“And that’s my goal with working with everyone at the Y,” Bethea said. “You should feel good about what you do inside the Y, and everyone here is willing and ready to help you meet all your fitness goals.”
Bethea will schedule new member orientation at the patron’s discretion.
During that session, patrons get a hands-on tour of the weight room and other facilities. She also offers personal training sessions if needed.
“Sometimes, when people first join the Y, they don’t know how to turn on the treadmill,” she said.
“When they look around the weight room and see everyone doing their own thing, it can be overwhelming. But, that’s where I come in.
“For years, I have loved to swim, run, walk and play tennis,” she said.
“This position at the Y allows me to share my love with others – and hopefully, lead them down a road where they can discover their own love of fitness.”
The YMCA also offers a variety of daily classes Monday through Friday beginning at 5:30 a.m.
