In celebration of Earth Day, the cities of Brewton and East Brewton will host the annual community-wide cleanup this Saturday, April 22.

The Jay Road landfill will open for free use for residents.
The annual event, sponsored by the Greater Brewton Area Chamber of Commerce and the Brewton City Council’s Earth Day committee, allows residents to dispose of trash, said GBAC director Judy Crane.

“There is a $7 fee to dispose of electronics such as televisions and computer components, and the landfill cannot accept household garbage or chemicals,” Crane said. “This event is to clean up what we call ‘trash.’

“Other partners throughout the area are accepting things like car batteries and oil.”

The landfill will be open from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. for use by residents only. No businesses or commercial organizations.

The East Brewton trash truck pick-ups may be scheduled for city residents by calling 867.7998.

Car batteries and oil may be disposed of at Auto Zone and O’Reilly Auto Parts on Douglas Avenue.

“If you have old appliances, this is a perfect time to get rid of those, too,” Crane said. “You can dispose of them free of charge Saturday as well at the landfill.

“There is a charge to dispose of tires. Passenger tires are $3 per tire; semi-truck tires, $10, and tractor tires, $25 per tire. No rims.”

Crane said chamber and city officials appreciate the public’s help in keeping the community clean.
