Brewton swim teams show out in recent meets

The Brewton Area swim teams were in competition last week, as TRM girls and boys both took first place in a 22-event swim meet at the Brewton Area YMCA swimming pool and the Tigersharks traveled to Dothan to compete in the 2017 Dothan Dolphins Wiregrass Peanut Invitational Swim Meet.
The girls finished ahead of Pratville Christian Academy and Jackson High School with 378 total points. Pratville and Jackson had 185 and 26, respectively.
The boys also defeated Prattville and Jackson, scoring 715 total points. That was better than Prattville’s 177 and Jackson’s 131.
Overall, TRM took 1,093 of a total 1,612 points to win the competition.
Individually, the Tigers received big meets from multiple swimmers.
Cole Jernigan scored in the 50 and 100 freestyle, and the 100 backstroke event. He was also a part of the 200 freestyle and medley relay.
Mac Baxter scored in the 100 fly, 50 free and 100 breatstroke events.
Jocelyn Carpenter scored in the 100 backstroke, 50 freestyle, and earned her cut for sectionals.
Sara Scott scored in the 100 breaststroke, 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke.
Sailor Smith scored in the 100 backstroke, 100 freestyle and 50 freestyle.
Dean Thelen placed first in the 500 freestyle.
Tiffany Reiss placed first in the 100 fly.
Cobi Godwin scored in the 100 freestyle, 100 breast and secured his cut in the 100 fly. He also helped in the 200 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay.
Caleb Kent and Sam LoDuca both scored in the 50 and 100 freestyle events, and Kent also placed in the 100 backstroke event.
Elizabeth Glass scored in the 50 and 100 freestyle races, and helped out in the 200 freestyle, 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.
The Tigers will travel to Mobile for the AHSAA South Sectionals at Bishop State College this Friday and Saturday.
The Tigersharks had another great meet last week, in a meet with over ten teams from across the southeast.
The Tigersharks that attended the meet were Amberlyn Carnley, Callie Kent, Sophia Ikner, Aubree Wiggins, Mac Baxter, Cole Jernigan, Tiffany Reiss, Austin Greenwood, Cobi Godwin, Sailor Smith, Caleb Kent, Dean Thelen, Jacob Thelen and Tennison Carnley.
Head coach Angel Boyd said that the team did a great job in Dothan and that she saw improvements.
“Overall, they swam hard,” Boyd said. “They competed like champions and made some great cuts in Dothan. I am so, very proud of each and every one of them.”
Standout swimmer Cole Jernigan had a great meet, cutting deep times for high school sectionals. His best swim came in the 200-freestyle, where he set a team record with a time of 1:48.
Cobi Godwin also had an impressive meet, setting several personal best times and deepening his sectional cuts. He won the 100-fly and 100-breaststroke races.
Mac Baxter dropped seven seconds off of his 100-fly time and got his sectional cut.
Caleb Kent had a banner weekend, securing his individual cut for sectionals.
Reiss, Greenwood and Sailor had standout performances in the meet. They all swam personal bests, Sailor secured a 100-backstroke cut, and Greenwood swam a personal best in the 500 and 100-freestlye.
Kent, Tennison Carnley, Thelen, Ikner, Wiggins and Amberlyn Carnley all swam personal bests in the meet.
The Tigersharks will be in action again Dec. 2 at the PNY Holiday Invitationl Swim Meet.
