East Brewton is having a birthday party and everyone is invited to attend.
Employees of East Brewton City Hall are working to put together artifacts and memorabilia to display during their History Gallery, which will be held Wed., June 27, through Tues., July 3, excluding Saturday and Sunday. The week long celebration will culminate on July 3, with refreshments served at East Brewton City Hall, located on Forrest Ave.
Right now the program planners are looking for material to be displayed. Any memorabilia or historical information will be returned to the owner after the celebration is over.
“Any information or memorabilia should be dropped off at City Hall by June 22 to make sure it will be included,” said B.J. Biddle, assistant clerk. “We will return everything after July 4.”
They are specially interested in finding a photograph of N. J. Dixon, who was, either the first mayor, or one of the first.
“We have photos of all the mayors except Dixon,” said Karen Singleton, who was city clerk for 42 years. “We hope someone out there has one that we can borrow.”
Singleton is very knowledgeable about the history of East Brewton and her help will be very beneficial. She has a deep interest in the history of the community. Even before she was employed by the City of East Brewton, her father served on the East Brewton City Council.
“He also served as as scoutmaster of Troop 43 of the Boy Scouts for many years,” she said. “I have a book of photographs of the boys that I will have on display.
Biddle has worked with city hall for almost two years. She is a 2006 graduate of W.S. Neal and married to her high school sweetheart. She, too, has a very big interest in helping put the East Brewton up-coming party together. Along with Karen Singleton and B.J.Biddle, also working on the project are Kristy Edwards, Steve Dunaway and Jackie Rabren.
