The T.R. Miller Tigers are now 2-0 in regular season games after a huge win over the Excel Panthers on Friday night at Municipal Stadium at T.R. Miller High School.
The Tigers would draw first blood at the 11:27 mark of the first quarter as Darius Webb would intercept the ball for a 32-yard touchdown return, bringing the score 7-0.
Excel would fire back at the 8:35 mark with Excel’s, Justin Manuel coming down with a 11-yard pass from Joshua Gandy.
Excel would fail to pick up the extra point attempt and the score would stand at 7-6, in favor of TRM.
TRM would fumble the ball but recover on a kick return but would regain as quickly as it was lost.
TRM would again drive down to the Excel 25-yard line and would find Gavin Leggett in the end-zone on a third and eight, only to have it was called back on a flag for an illegal man down the field.
In response, Matt Morgan would setup for a good, 36-yard field goal attempt.
The Tigers would lead going into the second quarter 10-6.
The second quarter would see only one scoring situation for either team, with the points coming from a last second 16-yard field goal, coming from Matt Morgan and extending the TRM lead to 13-6.
Coach Keith Etheredge would head to the locker room for the half heated.
The huge players for both teams during the first two quarters of play seemed to be the flags.
“We will have to come out and stop making mistakes. We played terrible that half and need to improve as we come out for the third quarter,” said Etheredge.
The third quarter would start with a return by TRM’s, Darius Webb down to the Excel 39-yard line.
Sophomore, Narkavis Campbell would strike a huge 50-yard run at 10:41, to put the Tigers up 20-6 against Excel.
The huge touchdown run from Campbell, would be followed up with another huge 35-yard run from Darius Webb at 8:42, followed by another great kick from Matt Morgan, bringing the score to 27-6.
T.R. Miller would again strike with a huge 85-yard interception return from Jalyn Walker and a good extra point attempt, closing out the third quarter with a score of 34-6.
Miller would go for the rest of the game without scoring again but the Panthers would attempt to fight back with a huge 66-yard pass to Keyon McMillian for an Excel TD, bringing the total 34-13.
TRM would close Excel out for the remainder of the quarter to capture their second win in a row.
“I’m very proud of my guys and the way they played. We fought some issues the first half of the game but overcome those and played a great second half,” Etheredge said.
The Tigers will travel this week to St. Michael’s in Mobile for a Thursday night game.
