UPDATE/Article Clarification: The Brewton Standard would like to clarify some information reported in the July 8, 2020 edition about the YMCA.
The locker rooms at the Brewton Area YMCA were sanitized and officials notified those who had been in the pool and locker room. This info was received on July 3. The facility did not close.
The person who tested positive for COVID-19 last used the YMCA on Monday, June 29 for one hour and only used the adult locker room and swam laps in the pool.
We apologize for the error and are happy to set the record straight.

The Brewton Area YMCA recently closed due to COVID-19. Reported last Wednesday, the entire facility was contaminated after a member visited the facility on Monday, June 29. According to the press release, the member that tested positive for the virus last visited the Brewton location for one hour. During the visit, the member used the adult locker room and swam laps in the pool.
“We thought it important to inform you of this positive test, just as we thought it important to inform you earlier in the month of the positive test by another member, to be fully open and transparent, and hopefully to relieve any concerns you may have,” the press release stated.
According to the press release, the locker rooms have been sanitized and the facility was closed for two days.
As reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, chlorine should “inactivate,” the coronavirus, but little is known.
The statement read, “Because chlorinated pool water has been shown to kill viruses, it’s likely that it also kills coronavirus, but this hasn’t been confirmed. The CDC says that when swimming pools are properly maintained, the chlorine in the water should ‘inactivate’ coronavirus, which would prevent the virus from spreading. This makes sense, because there’s no evidence that coronavirus spreads to people through the water in pools.”
The Brewton YMCA is open again. The hours are Mon. through Fri. 5 a.m. until 7 p.m.; Sat. 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. and Sunday 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. For more information contact the office at 251-867-9622.
