For 30 years, April has been designated as Child Abuse Awareness Month, and one group in Escambia County is doing their part to keep that awareness going.

Stephanie Myrick, director and forensenic interviewer with the Escambia County Regional Child Advocacy Center, said her organization makes it part of their routine to bring awareness to adults and children alike.

“Each year, the staff of ECRCAC conducts child abuse prevention presentations to third grade students in the city and county school systems,” Myrick said. “Our mission at ECRCAC is to provide resources and services to child victims of sexual abuse and severe physical abue, their supportive family members and the community. We also work to facilitate joint investigations and follow-up services to fictims and their families using a mult-disciplinary team partnership. We also work to empower the community for child abuse and neglect prevention.”

Each year the CAC, located on Evergreen Avenue in Brewton, fills their lawn with blue windmills to signify the commemorative time period.

Staff members include Myrick along with Family/Victim Advocate Kayla Gassner; and Investigator Deric Smith.

The ECRCAC serves Escambia, Conecuh and Monroe Counties as well as Poarch Social Services. Offices are located at 400 Evergreen Ave., Brewton.
