Quarantines and virtual meetings and events became a common theme throughout most of 2020 and into 2021 causing many events to be cancelled or revamped to meet guidelines for health safety.

The Distinguished Young Woman competition was no different.

With the 2021 Escambia County DYW event being held virtually, organizers for the 2022 competition are anxious to get back to an “in person” event this year.

Suzanne Barnett, chairman of the board of directors for the Escambia County DYW competition, said the culmination of the competition will be held at Flomaton High School on July 31 — and will be open to the public.

“As a board we are so very happy to be able to host a live event,” Barnett said. “Last year we were pleased with the outcome of our virtual performance, but nothing can replace a live audience! While we are still practicing social distancing and will at the night of the show, we are attempting to create as natural a program as possible.”

Tickets will be $10 with programs available for $10 at the door.

Three young women will be vying for the title of Escambia County’s Distinguished Young Woman. Contestants are:

Sydney Aaron attends W.S. Neal High School in East Brewton and plans to attend Troy University to study business management. She has served as drum major for the W.S. Neal High School Band since 2019 and has ben a member of the Key Club, the yearbook staff, the W.S. Neal Concert Band, a member of the FFA String Band for the 2018-19 and 2019-20 years, has been a member of the Light Student Ministry and a member of the First Baptist Church of East Brewton Adult Choir. For her talent she will be performing a vocal and dance selection.

Sarah Hartley attends T.R. Miller High School in Brewton and plans to attend Auburn University to study elementary education. She has been a member of the National Honors Society, has served as the SGA Treasurer, a member of the T.R. Miller Colorguard, Diamond Dolls, Spanish Club, Pep Club, First Presbyterian Church Choir, SGA Class Representative for the 10^th and 11^th grade year, and a member of the First Presbyterian Church Youth Group. She is employed at Chaos Concession Stand in Brewton. For her talent she will be performing a flag routine to “Shut Up and Dance With Me.”

Madison Lambeth attends Flomaton High School in Flomaton and plans to attend Troy University to study secondary history teaching. She has been active in ballet, tap, jazz, baton, Starz Dance Team, jazz band, marching band, concert band, majorette and writing. For her talent she will be performing a baton routine to “Proud Mary.”

Barnett said the program will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 31 in the auditorium of Flomaton High School in Flomaton.
