An enthusiastic group of students joined officials in a ground breaking ceremony Monday that officially signaled the beginning of what will become the T.R. Miller HIgh School Girls Softball Complex.
Located on property adjacent to the campus of T.R. Miller High, the proposed complex will be the home field for games for the Lady Tigers team.
Brewton City Schools Superintendent Dr. Kenneth Varner said the new complex would be “something special.”
“We will be expanding the campus and footprint of T.R. Miller High School with this facility,” Varner said. “This is the start of something special.”
Members of the current softball team at T.R. Miller were on hand to witness the ground breaking event and Varner reminded them of how the complex will impact generations to come.
“You’re here representing all the girls who will play on this field in the future,” Varner said. “Your daughters and granddaughters will play on this field, and you will share that with them.”
Varner also thanked the City of Brewton, members of the Brewton City School Board of Education, faculty and staff at T.R. Miller High School for their vision and commitment to see the project through.
“We thank the city for making the property available for this project,” Varner said. “Without that, this would not have happened. They knew what we wanted to do and they have been on board for a long time. There will not be another field as nice as this one once it’s done.”
Trees and brush were being removed on Monday to make way for construction of the new complex in the coming months.
TRM Lady Tigers took up shovels to assist in the breaking of ground for the proposed complex. The team, lead by Coach Haley Lynch, were happy to help.
“You seniors will miss the chance to play on this field,” Varner told the team. “But, the rest of you will have a beautiful field to call home.”
No specific date for completion was given during Monday’s ceremonies.
