There was a different kind of family gathering in town on Thursday with smiles, hugs and good wishes all around.
Freddie and Lisa McMillan, owners of Drexell & Honeybee’s Donations Only Restaurant, opened their hearts and the restaurant for any who were looking to share the holiday meal.
Lisa said the day was a busy one, but the smiles and warm greetings were worth all the work.
The couple, along with a handful of volunteers, began their cooking early Thursday and turned simple ingredients into great mounds of comfort food.
From the mashed potatoes to the pork-laden greens, the buffet bar was filled with every dish a Thanksgiving feast-lover could hope for that day.
“We served 97 people on Thanksgiving,” Lisa said. “I was told by one couple that they were gonna be at home with really nothing to do and found out about us being open and joined us for their Thanksgiving meal.”
In addition to local residents joining in the holiday meal, folks from around the region made their way to the restaurant, Lisa said.
“Some people came all the way from Pace Fla., to dine with us,” Lisa said. “And, we plan to do this again for Christmas.”
Plans for the Christmas Day meal are already being made. And, she said, volunteers make it possible.
“We had several volunteers to help this year including Ricky Jackson, Gwen Walton, Nena Thomas, Stephanie Tisdale and our regular volunteers Angie and Betsy,” Lisa said.
The “donations only” restaurant serves more than food for those who come through the doors — they serve hospitality and hope every day the stove is on.
D&HBs restaurant is located at 109 Lee Street in historic downtown Brewton and is open Tuesday through thursday beginning at 11 a.m. and serving until the food runs out.
