Running a community-based non-profit organization takes patience, compassion and a good amount of tenacity. Shae Hines has all of those qualities and her work was recognized last week by the State Association of Habitat for Humanity and was named Affiliate Leader of the Year.
Brandon Dixon, Executive Director for Alabama Habitat for Humanity, presented the honor to Hines on Wednesday, April 5 during the organization’s annual recognition awards banquet and workshop sessions.
In the letter submitted as a nomination for the statewide award, Hines was described as having a vision for helping those in need of housing and housing repairs in the county the Escambia County Habitat for Humanity organization serves.
“Shae is a natural born leader,” the anonymous nomination letter stated. “She has a genuine desire to help people and better our community. She is constantly researching potential projects and the necessary funds to complete them. Shae truly puts the needs of others first.
“She has made it a point to be involved with programs that work on helping people to better themselves and their community. Since becoming director of the Escambia County affiliate she has researched, applied and received several grants that is allowing them to accomplish the goals of Habitat for Humanity. She has successfully led several fundraising events that has provided funds for several projects. She is very energetic and passionate about her work.
“Through her dedication and consistency, she has brought a smaller affiliate up to the equivalent of the larger one in our state. A true leader with the needs of others in the forefront.”
Hines said she doesn’t do the work of the local Habitat organization on her own.
“All the praises go to the most high,” Hines said. “I truly love my job. I’m so thankful for my team, past and present. I could never do what I do, without them”
Hines continues to work toward making safe, affordable housing a possibility to more people in the county served by the organization.
“I still have so much to do to help build strength, stability and self-reliance through shelter throughout Escambia County,” Hines said. “Affordable housing plays a critical role in strong and stable communities.”
