Published reports in 1990 had Brewton’s 638th Ordinance on alert as the Gulf War was building. That group would move from alert to activated and make their way to the front.
The group returned home in August 1991 with many of the members losing touch over the years.
A local member of that group is hoping to gather those fellow Ordinance Company members to enjoy some social time together without the fear of the war in which they served.
JoJo Hoomes is working with other Ordinance members to organize a reunion next month in Brewton.
“We just wanted to get together and enjoy each other’s company for a while,” Hoomes said. “We hope to have good participation and have a good time of food and fellowship with each other.”
Hoomes said the event is being organized with the help of Donald Thompson, Donald Lee and Wendall Richburg, all former members of the 638th Ordinance.
“We had folks from Selma, Livingston, Brewton and other places that served with us,” Hoomes said. “We’ve lost touch over the years, but we hope that a reunion will help us get together again.”
The event is being planned for Aug. 26 from 2 to 7 p.m. at the Hourglass in downtown Brewton. A meet-and-greet time is set from 2 to 5 p.m. with dinner planned for a 5 p.m. service. A social time will continue after the meal until 8 p.m. The cost is $50 single and $70 for couples.
Hoomes asked those who plan to attend make reservations and payment by Aug. 12 so that a head count can be provided for the rib eye steak dinner.
If you, or someone you know, was a part of the group involved in the Gulf War from 638th Ordinance, please contact Hoomes to confirm your place at the reunion.
