Students in the fifth grade reading class taught by Tammy Bonds will have some new books soon thanks to a grant awarded by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution Junior Membership committee.
Bonds said the funding of the $500 grant will allow her to add books of interest for her students.
“We will be adding the ‘Who Was…? and the ‘I Survived’ series of books to our classroom library,” Bonds said. “It’s a way for us to have books of interest that will also be teaching history in a fun way for the students.”
Susan Crowell, Literacy Committee Chair for the Prattville based organization, said the awarding of the grant was significant due to the limited number of grants available through the program.
“She is to be congratulated as she is one of five recipients in the State of Alabama and one of 100 in the nation to receive one of these grants,” Crowell said. “Supporting education is a primary objective of the National Society since its founding and we are excited to be able to help classrooms nationwide.”
Bonds wrote the grant and submitted her planned use if the award was given. The grant, which is now made available twice annually by the group, bestows $500 to the recipient to use towards the goal set forth in the initial grant request.
