Alabama is the safest state in America for medical malpractice, a new study has revealed.
Personal injury attorney Gatti, Keltner, Bienvenu & Montesi, PLC analyzed official government records from the National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) on the amount of medical malpractice payment reports in each state between 1990 and June 2023. These findings were totaled and divided by the number of unique NPDB practitioners to reveal the states with the least incidents of medical malpractice per practitioner.
Alabama topped the study as the state with the lowest incidence rate of medical malpractice. Since 1990, approximately 2,606 medical malpractice payment reports have been recorded in Alabama. During this time, there have been 77 medical malpractice payment reports of $2 million or more. 2002 was the worst year for patients in Alabama, with 108 reports lodged during this year. Despite this, Alabama still has the lowest incidence of medical malpractice in America, averaging 0.151 reports per practitioner.
Coming in behind Alabama at the number two spot was
Oregon, followed sequentially by Alaska, Arkansas, North Dakota and Colorado. Rounding out the top 10 states were Virginia, Arizona, Minnesota and Vermont.
