Cities work to provide services for Earth Day observation Saturday

The annual Earth Day observance will be on April 22 with planned services offered by local communities on Saturday, April 20 and continuing through the week of April 22.
In Brewton and East Brewton, residents will have the opportunity to get rid of unwanted items and debris through a variety of avenues including dumpsters, the local landfill and even pickup.
Brewton city officials will be placing dumpsters throughout the community to allow for disposal of unwanted items. Dumpsters, available to city residents only, will be placed in each district for the convenience of those residents.
District 1: a dumpster will be in place at the old Walmart shopping center behind Farmer’s Furniture;
District 2: Hwy 41 and H.K. Matthews Drive (at the church);
District 3: J.L. Fisher Center;
District 4: at the corner of East Jackson Street and Sowell Road;
District 5: behind Arby’s at entrance to the E.O. Wilson Nature Park.
No electronics, tires, batteries or oil will be accepted at the dumpsters allowing only trash, etc.
For electronics and appliance disposal, the Jay Road Landfill will be open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at no charge for appliances. For electronics (televisions, computers, etc.) can be disposed of at the Public Works department next to the Brewton Fire Station.
Automobile batteries and oil can be taken to Auto Zone and O’Reilly Auto Parts for disposal.
Old tires can be disposed of at the Public Works dumpster on St. Nicholas Avenue with a limit of four per household.
In East Brewton, city workers will be available for pick-up of items to be disposed of on Saturday. Contact City of East Brewton at 251-867-7998 to arrange for pick-up of trash (available for residents only).

County officials have announced that dumpsters will be in place beginning Monday, April 22 for residents outside the corporate limits of Brewton and East Brewton.
Dumpsters will be in place for rural county residents at the following locations:
13533 Hwy. 29 in the Boykin/Damascus community at the county shop;
3251 Pea Ridge Road in Brewton at the county shop;
351 Jack Springs Road in Atmore at the county shop;
Ridge Road in the Springhill community serving East Brewton;
and 224 Hwy 31 in Flomaton at the Flomaton Firehouse.
No tires, electronics, batteries, fluorescent bulbs or ballasts, paint or household garbage to these dumpsters.
For items not allowed at dumpster locations, the Commission has made arrangements to accept those items on April 17 only at their county shop locations in Brewton, Atmore, Boykin/Damascus and at the Firehouse in Flomaton. On that day, personnel will be on hand from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. only.
County dumpsters will remain in place through April 27.
