For parents who have lost a child a planned memorial could be a place of solace and a place to honor their child.
The Meadorwood Garden Club in Brewton has joined with the City of Brewton to make the “Angel of Hope Memorial Garden” possible for the community’s grieving parents.
Club member Becky Lambert said the project is one the club hopes to make a reality in the near future — but funds to bring it to reality will be needed.
“It is our desire to build an Angel of Hope garden in Brewton where parents of our community can memorialize their beloved child,” Lambert said. “With that in mind, our club has joined with the City of Brewton to make this project a reality. The city recently approved a 20-foot by 20-foot area in the downtown city park for the memorial. This area will be landscaped with florals, benches, personalized pavers and a statue of the Angel of Hope. With an estimated cost of $50,000, we hope to raise half — or $25,000 — before work can begin.”
The group will be selling personalized pavers in the future to add to the funds to bring the garden to life, Lambert said.
Angel of Hope Memorial Gardens have been seen popping up across the country over the last year or so, Lambert said.
The gardens began to appear in various towns and cities after the book, The Christmas Box by Richard Paul Evans, was published in 1993,” Lambert said. “In the story, a woman sits at a statue and mourns the loss of her daughter. In the ensuing years, the idea has spread across the country as people recognized the deep, ongoing grief that results from the loss of a child. To date, more than 100 memorials have been built in the United States to acknowledge this grieving process and to offer a parent or loved one, not only a way to permanently honor their lost child, but a beautiful and serene setting in which to do so.”
