As the new school year begins at Coastal Alabama Community College, students on the Brewton campus are learning history inside and outside the classroom.
On Saturday, August 24, 2024, members of the Coastal Alabama Historical Society (CAHS) traveled to Fort Mims in Baldwin County for the annual reenactment of the Battle of Fort Mims, a major event in the Creek War. With the sponsorship of the Escambia County Historical Society, the trip included a stop at the historic Stagecoach Cafe in Stockton, Alabama.
The reenactment helped students envision life as it was in 1813. From historical campsites to tomahawk throwing, students enjoyed a unique experience. The Battle of Fort Mims, along with the Battle of Burnt Corn Creek, ignited the Creek War. These local events influenced both state and national history.
CAHS is the newest student organization at Coastal Alabama and connects students to the rich local history of South Alabama and beyond. Joining the students on this adventure were a number of Coastal Alabama employees, including several reenactors. For several in the group, it was their first time witnessing a historical reenactment. Inspired by their visit, members of the Coastal Alabama Historical Society plan to explore more local history.
